Race Report Ingolf at 12-hour Mid-West Time Trial in Ohio (Part 4/4) I took everything possible and start pushing as hard as I could to gain enough additional miles. Changed my watch settings to time so I would know when to get the phone out for a picture of the Garmin 1040 data (with timer and milage on screen). First thought 225 miles (362km) would be ok but I gained speed a bit again. After a bit I noticed it’s going to be over 228 miles (367km) and I realized a minor descent helping me to gain speed again. Was almost hoping for 230 miles (370) but ran a bit short. After 11 hours, 59 minutes and 31 seconds I took a picture of 229.70 miles (369.7km). OK the last 29 seconds may have put me on 229.9 miles (19.14 mph/30.8km/h average speed) or even 230 miles (370km), but I was happy as it was. I knew it was another 7.5 miles (12km) to the finish line (total miles about 237.22 / 382km), and I relaxed a little bit. Still could not slow down much because I start running into a situation to need a bathroom stop. I made it after almost 12 hours 30 minutes to finish the lap 12 with 229.7 miles (369.7km) for the 12 hours. It was an emotional moment to me. I moved off the road and stopped next to the porter potty. It was my first stop during the race so 12 hours 30 minutes with zero stops. That was a new experience for me. I got slowly out of my Velomobile holding onto the velo plus my cane. My left leg was very shaky, and I had no intend to fall. Waited a bit for help and was very thankful for Katarina come helping me to walk up on the trailer where the porter potty was placed. Once I finished, we together moved the velo to my car that was not far away. I handed my phone with the pictured to Giovanny who turned it in to the race organizers. I had to sit down for a moment and walked with some help to time keeping spot. Admitting that I almost had wet eyes because that was my first attempt in the Velomobile and first time that long and that distance since my hip/leg surgery. Oh … I checked the next longest distance … and it was 228.94 miles (368.4km) … I am glad I kept pushing. Also, for those wondering … My physical therapist and orthopedic specialist knew I would do it. Not the smartest Idea while in process of recovery but I kept everything like pain level and a few other things under control and if it would have been too much, I would have stopped as I did before. Distance for an HPV may not be much for many but for me it was amazingly cool to get that done already.
